13 Macie

I see the back of one of Kesivor’s damaged fuel tanks on his shuttle, and my heart plunges into my stomach because the vessel is barely hanging on by a thread. I need to get to him, quickly. If I can just dock my fighter ship back to his shuttle, I might have enough fuel to keep us both going and to prevent his shuttle from spinning off into space.

I don’t have much time. I need to make the link happen. It’s vitally necessary that I get this right the first time, because his shuttle will start spiraling out of control if I don’t dock to him soon.

I feel a budding conflict begin to sprout in my mind. I’m torn between wanting to rush to help him, but I also making sure that the shuttle makes it to Calico.

“There won’t be a Kesivor to save if you don’t save his vessel first, Macie,” I remind myself as I quickly speed toward his shuttle hovering in deep space like a broken unit of steel and aluminum.

The battle is over, for now. None of the Kriall fighter ships that attempted to shoot us both down succeeded, all thanks to my solid team effort with Kesivor.

I feel proud that I was able to maneuver around, in out and up and down against the Kriall fighter ships. I had been able to use speed, agility, and years of trained practice and skill in order to sideswipe the Kriall. They don’t have the fighter pilot skills to keep up with me.

They severely damaged Kesivor’s shuttle, but I know that once we land back on the surface of the mystery planet the impairment can be repaired by an engineering team.

With sweaty palms and nervous sweat stinging in my eyes, I am able to link the two vessels together with relatively more ease and gracefulness than I had expected to happen.

I work well under pressure, that’s a natural fact. When it comes down to the wire, I can accomplish most anything I set my mind to, including taking out the three Kriall ships that desperately wanted us dead.

“There will be more of them,” I tell myself so that I am always prepared. “But for now, we are in the clear.”

“Macie, are you there?” I hear Calico’s soothingly familiar voice chime through my communicator.

“Yes,” I proclaim. “I have Kesivor’s shuttle. It was hit, but I am having to steer his shuttle linked to my fighter, so I haven’t been able to check on him yet.”

“Put it in auto and let me know if he’s okay,” I hear a male voice that I don’t recognize ask. “This is Dakstal.”

“Oh, okay!” I instantly declare.

My heart pounds because I know that Dakstal is the leader of the entire Salitan race. I feel like the pressure is really on now to bring back a report of good news to him about his beloved executive officer.

I engage the controls and quickly race to Kesivor’s aid. He’s not responding or moving. I touch his green skin all over with shaking, anxious hands.
